Travelling Homeward

The blustering wind whips past the van, blowing a light dusting of powdery snow everywhere. The pine trees are wearing a hint of white. Little paths of snow move in zigzags across the dark road. Headlights pierce through the semi darkness. Towns and cities zip by. Inside the van, children are reading and playing in between spats. Our Christmas in Canada is over and the full van is headed homeward. My mind is full of plans as I watch cars move like ocean waves over the hills. I am excited to be going home, but sad that vacation is drawing to a close. I have so much that I would like to accomplish! There are knitting projects to be completed or started, books to be read, photographs to be taken. So many things, so little time.

A new year is dawning, bringing with it a fresh start. But all of the old lists, goals, and activities remain. Many things that I want to accomplish in 2012 are things that I did not accomplish in 2011. I am determined to get them done this year.

The highway reminds me of my life. There are people all around, moving forward. We are all headed somewhere. Hills and valleys break up the long, straight sections of road. I am constantly moving, often letting the scenery pass by without a thought. But when I look around, I see trees, stately farmhouses, busy towns, glittering lights. Lovely sights. These remind me of the memories that I hold dear, fleeting things that I remember. Memories of days gone by, of the old year.

As I travel homeward, I stop and reflect in so many things, but one thing that stands out is what I have done with my life. What does it all add up to, really? In the end, the things that I do don't really matter. Only the things done through, in and for Jesus Christ will matter. What have I done for Him? What gifts can I lay at His feet? What will He say to me when I end my journey and go to my heavenly home? I may not have the answers to these questions yet, but what I do know is this: no matter where I am travelling on this highway of my life, Jesus is with me, protecting, leading, helping, encouraging. He was with me this past year and He will be with me in the coming year. Is He with you? Have you thought of Jesus as you plan and think about this new year?

"The First Snowfall"

The First Snowfall
By James Russell Lowell

The snow had begun in the gloaming,
And busily all the night
Had been heaping field and highway
With a silence deep and white.

Every pine and fir and hemlock
Wore ermine too dear for an earl,
And the poorest twig on the elm tree
Was ridged inch deep with pearl.

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!!

p.s. thoughts on the new design?

Right now I am actually on vacation visiting family in New Brunswick, but I scheduled this post to show you some more of my first-day-of-Christmas-vacation-and-two-days-before-Christmas snow photos. :)

Now it finally feels like Christmas

So, today I had planned on ranting about how it didn't feel like Christmas yet because we had no snow.

Well, thanks to this:

That isn't going to happen. :)

This morning I woke up at 7:30, and at first I was disappointed that I had woken up so early on my first day of vacation. But when I looked out the window, I was glad that I had been awakened so early because

WE FINALLY GOT SNOW!!! Some snow had fallen a couple weeks ago, but it hadn't even lasted for a whole day. This has lasted. :) So, here is a little taste of my wintery morning:

This one is probably my favorite:
